Celebration of Humanism in Healthcare with Dr. Sadie Elisseou

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is delighted to host Dr. Sadie Elisseou, a national expert in humanistic care, a Harvard Medical School instructor, and a physician in the Boston VA System, on Saturday, July 27, for the Gold Foundation’s annual summer event at Martha’s Vineyard.

Dr. Elisseou’s method of care acknowledges that healthcare organizations and teams need a complete picture of a patient’s life situation — past and present — in order to provide effective care with a healing orientation.

Dr. Elisseou has presented widely about healing from traumatic events, including speaking with the 14th Dalai Lama. She brings her insights to Martha’s Vineyard this summer at the annual Gold Foundation gathering.

The event will include Dr. Elisseou’s presentation titled, “How Healthcare Can Be More Human: Lessons from Trauma-Informed Care,” followed by a Q&A, as well as an opportunity to meet Gold Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kathleen Reeves, Board Chair Richard Sheerr, and fellow advocates of humanism in healthcare.

About Dr. Sadie Elisseou

Dr. Sadie Elisseou is a Gold Humanism Honor Society member and a nationally recognized expert in the field of trauma-informed care, an organizational framework for supporting survivors of various forms of trauma. Her award-winning curriculum is now being taught at medical schools and healthcare institutions across the country.

More than two-thirds of children report at least one traumatic event by age 16, and about 70% of adults worldwide report at least one traumatic event. Dr. Elisseou will share with us the importance of humanistic care and how doctors can adapt their methods, specific to each patient, to ensure a safe and caring healthcare space.

Dr. Elisseou is a primary care physician in the Boston VA healthcare system, Clinical Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Adjunct Instructor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is the leading nonprofit championing humanism in healthcare. Founded in 1988 by Dr. Arnold P. Gold, a world renowned pediatric neurologist at Columbia University, and his wife, Dr. Sandra Gold, the Gold Foundation has created the Gold Humanism Honor Society in medical education, spread the White Coat Ceremony around the world, and designed tools and awards to reinforce optimal healthcare. We believe in humanistic care —compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care that you, your family, and all people deserve.
